Cleveland Dek Hockey Opening Day In Mayfield Heights- June 29

Cleveland Dek Hockey’s opening day in Mayfield Heights lit up the afternoon with four barn burner contests in the fast and furious Division 1. This is without question the top street hockey forum in Ohio.

Shoot First 8 5 O’Clock Somewhere 7

The first Dek Hockey game in Mayfield Heights was characterized by speed, hustle and finesse. What began as a 4 goal rally and potential blow out ended in a cliff hanger down to the very last second of stop time. Shoot First tallied goals from Sean Burke (3)and Bo Zinner(2), with more points from teammates Brad Mackenzie and John Kuzniar. They were met with steady resistance from Garrett Sadler(son-hat trick) and Sean Sadler(dad), Liam Conway (Brock University), Neil Conway (former pro), Dean Kelly(Ireland’s IIHF Champions) and Seanna Conway(NWHL and Gilmour Academy coach). Michael Thompson took the win in net over Chase Johnson.

Misfits 10 Westcor 10

The return of the Misfits and the Wiess clan v perennial contender Westcor began with a scoreless first period and brick walls from goaltenders Garrett Sadler and Michael Thompson. Jason Wiess (dad) and Matt Wiess (son-Barons) lead the Misfit scoring with 4 goals each. Add a couple more from Scott Kalman and assists from Adam Dudziak and Shawn Sadler. Ringer Brad MacKenzie had 5 goals for Westcor, with points from Mike Timms(English pro) and wife Sarah Timms, and Ashland University lax player Henry Wessel. Westcor’s 5 goal run in the third period confirmed the draw.

Cleveland Kings 9 Painesville Furniture & Carpet 6

Talent ridden rosters were on both sides in game three, as shown early in the run and gun style of both teams. In the end, the King’s extra line may have helped them prevail in the afternoon sun. Andrew Zerneskie lead the way with 5 goals, with help from Anthony Balmenti with 2 goals, and goals from Hal Lane and Scott Zierneskie. Adam Yaracz prevailed in the crease. For PFC, Mike Ingenthorn managed 4 goals from every angle, and his pal Attorney Nick Laudato (Gilmour Academy) added a couple of rockets, finding their way to the back of the net. Tony Parenti added an assist, and Mike Thompson was stunning in net.

Box of Rocks 12 Thunder Turtles 10

Perhaps the best forum for a tour of past stars of Cleveland Area high school ice hockey was the Box of Rocks(US, Mayfield, Cleveland Heights) v. Thunder Turtles (Mentor HS Alums). It featured Evan Krueger, who celebrated his coming selection as Cleveland HS Hockey Player of the Decade by the News-Herald with 5 goals. His teammates included brother Anthony Krueger, Matt Yopko, Chris Laleberte and Jason Prior. All added Defense and points, with Dom Anselmo a wall in goal. The Mentor HS Alums made the victory difficult with 7 goals by Jake Tackett (CSU), 3 from Mike Garam, and a pair from Brady Kloss and Brandon Hudock. Justin Ropos withstood the party in the crease and a hail of orange orbs without flinching.
